Few people know that two of the world's most expensive raw materials are found in our country. Even stranger is the fact that one of them doesn't actually require much more than a patient walk. In southern Hungary, you can find it in the woods from October to the end of December, you just have to bend down to get it. What is it? Find out in our article!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In the top gastronomy you can often find shocking prices. The cost of preparing a meal is of course complex<\/a>, but one important factor is the raw material. Some are unique, some are special, some cannot be obtained except at a high price. Obviously, few people can afford them, and certainly very few people in the world use them to make food at home. These are the most expensive raw materials<\/a> used by luxury restaurants for special tasting menus that can be had for astronomical prices.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Albino caviar, also known as white pearl<\/span><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

This caviar is also \u201eonly\u201d an egg, but it is so rare that it is difficult to put a price on it. The world of caviar is a very special and unique world anyway, and it is not cheap to buy. The speciality of albino caviar, however, is that it comes from freshwater albino sturgeons. Not to mention the fact that albino sturgeons biologically need ten years to mature and produce eggs. It is undoubtedly a rare species and even rarer to come by. However, it is available at certain times and in very small quantities. These figures show that it is no coincidence that a kilo of this caviar costs more than 2.5 million forints. When a stock of it appears on the market, it is immediately snapped up by the best restaurants and chefs. In fact, it is almost impossible to get hold of. But if you do try it, remember the taste, because this rare delicacy is only available to a very few.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Swallow's nest soup<\/span><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Because there is such a thing! In China, it's a real delicacy that the wealthier people will give anything for. If you're wondering what this soup is made of, it's really made of swallow's nest. The birds that nest on rocky beaches and high cliffs in almost inaccessible places are the source of this dish. The price is not high for nothing, as it is extremely dangerous to get hold of these nests, and some people have been known to get into trouble climbing the cliffs. Another special feature of swallow's nest soup is that these winged creatures glue their shelters together with their own saliva. In China, this is a unique speciality, as a kilogram can cost up to a million forints.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

China's emblematic catch, the a gourmet's favourite<\/a>. Its origin is said to be due to a finicky emperor who loved to eat. But he refused to eat the same thing twice in one year. He wanted a different dish for every meal, every day. This caused a lot of trouble for the court cooks, who tried to do their best for their master. One of the cooks ran out of ideas one day. He was desperate for a solution, until a vendor in the market offered him a swallow's nest. He bought it and used it to make soup, which eventually became the monarch's favourite. Nowadays, it is a real speciality, not only because of the price but also because of the ingredients.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Domestic saffron<\/span><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

If you want to work with saffron, you should know that it is one of the most expensive spices in the world for a reason. It can cost up to 200,000 forints a kilo, and there was a time when it was more expensive than gold. The reason is that saffron species bloom for two weeks throughout the year. If that wasn't enough, the reddish brown fibres can only be picked by hand from the plant's pistil, one by one. Any mechanisation or technical solution is impossible. It is therefore extremely difficult to harvest saffron, which is why it is so expensive. The largest saffron producing nation, supplying the vast majority of the market, is Iran, but it is also grown in Italy, America and Spain. It is undoubtedly an important herb, as it is used as a base for dishes such as curry.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

White truffle, also known as Istrian truffle<\/span><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

You could call it a national trump card, a pledge of enrichment, but if it were that easy, everyone would be doing it. A kilogram of white truffles costs on average 7-800 thousand forints. It is a highly sought-after variety in the world, an exceptional raw material because of its intensity of scent, its distinctive flavour and texture. The price of this mushroom is high simply because it grows in very rare environmental conditions, and even then it is rare, even for truffle experts. It prefers oak woods, so if anyone is going to research it, try the southern part of the country, and even there it only grows from October until roughly the end of December.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Moose cheese<\/span><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Perhaps the most expensive cheese known in the world. It is made in only one place, at The Elk House farm in Bjurholm, northern Sweden. From the milk of just 3-4 elk, they produce four types of cheese. The reason for the shortage is that an elk can produce up to 5 litres of milk in one milking, and because they are very sensitive animals, they sometimes \u201etake offence\u201d and give nothing. The family that raises them treats them like their greatest treasure, but this is no coincidence, as it takes a long time to make cheese. This cheese has a slightly acidic flavour and a delicate, soft texture, perhaps most similar to camembert. If you want to experience this special culinary experience, you can get a kilo of this cheese for a mere 3-400 thousand forints.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
