In Germany and the US, there have been examples of restaurants completely banning under-18s for reasons of inappropriate behaviour that disturbs others, causing a huge public uproar. Is it a market niche or a business fiasco to operate with such a concept in a family-friendly domestic market?

The concept of “Adults Only” restaurants and hotels is becoming increasingly popular in the Hungarian hospitality industry. This trend in international markets has been around for a long time and is now gaining ground in Hungary. With adult-oriented services, restaurants and hotels offer a quieter, more relaxed atmosphere, making them attractive to guests looking for relaxation and comfort.

A unique characteristic of the Hungarian market is that the Hungarian hospitality industry is traditionally family-oriented, so the novelty of the “Adults Only” concept deserves special attention. In Hungary, the emergence of this type of service is attracting new clientele and market opportunities but it also challenges the traditional hospitality industry.

The business pros and cons of adult-oriented catering

Compared to international trends, this type of catering is still in its infancy in Hungary, but is clearly on the rise. It is important to note that this concept is not only targeting the luxury segment, but more and more mid-range places are also offering similar services.

  • More targeted marketing: The “Adults Only” label allows hotels and restaurants to better define their target market. This helps them to use specific marketing strategies, such as targeting couples interested in wellness, relaxation or romantic getaways.
  • Meeting specific needs: This model allows restaurants to offer services tailored to the specific needs of adult guests. For example, they can offer a more relaxed dining environment, a more sophisticated menu or special wellness programmes.
  • Exploiting market niches: The Adults Only concept provides an opportunity to exploit niche markets where guests are looking for a relaxed, child-free environment. This can be particularly attractive for those who want a quiet, stress-free environment.
  • Reduction in potential guest population: The “Adults Only” concept may limit the number of guests by excluding families with children. This can be particularly detrimental during the high tourist season when family trips are the main traffic.
  • Social sensitivity issues: Some may feel that this approach can be exclusionary and lead to social controversy. It is important that hotels and restaurants strike a fine balance in their communication to avoid creating a negative public perception.

Overall, the concept of “Adults Only” opens up new dimensions in Hungarian hospitality, allowing chefs and restaurateurs to approach catering in a new way. This will allow them to offer services to a wider range of guests while maintaining a high level of service. The key to success is for restaurants to communicate their services well and deliver experiences that meet the expectations of their target market.
