The team of the Faculty of Commerce, Hospitality and Tourism of the Budapest University of Economics and Business (BGE KVIK), the number one business university in Hungary with 18 000 students, has finished in 5th place in the EMCup 2023 international hotel management competition. The BGE „Pioneers” team won the 5th place and the „Best pitch-paper” award for the best developed and presented idea at the multi-stage competition, which took place on 12-13 February and was attended by 28 renowned universities from 14 countries. This year's theme was „Break the Mould”, where teams could choose the area they wanted to develop innovative ideas.

The „Pioneers” team of Hungarian KVIK students - Lili Ország, Zsófia Varga, Szonja Tóbel and Hanna Balázs - was the only Hungarian team invited to the competition. Their mentors, Klára Karakasné Dr. Morvay, Associate Professor of the Institute of Hospitality at BGE KVIK and Róbert Kovács, General Manager of Novotel Budapest Danube Hotel Cluster, helped them to prepare for the event.

Dr. Klára Morvay, Associate Professor of the Institute of Hospitality at BGE KVIK: „We are proud of the talent of our enthusiastic students, as we achieve better and better results every year. The „Best pitch-paper” special prize for the best developed and presented idea and the excellent ranking also prove that it is worthwhile to place special emphasis on communication, presentation and debate skills in education.”

A BGE csapata a ServeUout (Serve You Out) nevű brand kidolgozásakor arra fókuszált, hogy az eddig csak költséget jelentő szállodai tevékenységekkel (mint a housekeeping, karbantartás, IT, konyha) hogyan lehet bevételt generálni.

About the competition

The competition was preceded by several months of preparation, during which the team had to complete various tasks: an introduction video, a social media campaign, a creative CV, a Mapstell personality test, the development of an idea and writing it in the form of a scientific article, and a 3-minute elevator pitch.

This year's theme was „Break the Mould”. The idea was to break the mould, the habits and the systems. In this context, the teams themselves were able to choose the area in which they would come up with ideas that broke with tradition. In developing the brand ServeUout (Serve You Out), the BGE team focused on how to make hotel operations (such as housekeeping, maintenance, IT, kitchen) how to generate revenue. The areas highlighted are those that are most visible on the expenditure side of hotels' lives. Their ideas can also move towards profitability in these areas. They also came up with solutions to offer these areas to local residents.

The result achieved by the BGE KVIK team is also a credit to the national education. We can be sure that the fatal professionals, by the future hospitality, and tourism can be in good hands.
