How is it made?

Meat is made up of five basic components: proteins, fats, trace elements, carbohydrates and water. They get these same building blocks directly from plants such as peas and brown rice. How does it affect the environment?

Beyond Meat has commissioned the University of Michigan's Center for Sustainable Systems to conduct a „producer-to-store” life cycle assessment of Beyond Burger. It's a plant-based meatloaf that looks, acts and tastes just like fresh ground beef. The aim of the study, to compare environmental impacts. Here, greenhouse gas emissions, accumulated energy demand (energy use), water use and land use - with typical US beef production.  

Based on a comparative assessment of the current Beyond Burger production system and the 2017 beef LCA (Thoma et al.), Beyond Burger 90% generates less greenhouse gas emissions. It requires 46% less energy, impacts water scarcity by more than 99% less and impacts land use by 93% less than a quarter pound of US beef.
