The New Year is here, we are full of resolutions. If after the big festive heyehuja, you do vow not to drink alcohol - a laudable intention - be prepared for some unpleasant side effects, the expert warns.
The positive benefits of a life without alcohol, such as a reduced risk of cancer or liver disease, are well known, but there are other consequences of quitting drinking.

Dr Preethi Daniel from the London Doctors Clinic explains what happens to our bodies after a sudden bout of abstinence following a mulchy winter break:
„In the first few days, you may experience insufficient, shallow sleep and mild dehydration. This is a sign that the body is going through a period of alcohol withdrawal. These may be accompanied by restlessness, shivering, nausea, sweating and anxiety. Despite all this, there is of course no question that reducing or eliminating alcohol intake is very beneficial to our overall health. After all the fine champagne or strong drinks we have enjoyed over the Christmas and New Year period, our livers clearly need a rest.”
The human liver needs an average of six weeks to recover from a rough patch, a dry January can be ideal towards a healthy life.
„I don't want to scare anyone away, the symptoms of withdrawal will soon disappear, after about a week you'll be sleeping soundly and waking up more rested and energetic after less sleep,” reassures Dr Daniel. „Our skin will also thank you for the rest, it will be brighter and smoother. In addition, our immune system will be strengthened, which is very important in these difficult times.”
